Full Frontal Comic Con Entry
It's very amusing to think that I hardly saw anyone at Comic Con... when actually, I did see a whole lot of people, but not the totally cool peeps on my f-list. XD This year's con was an incredibly rewarding, yet fan-friendly experience and it helped me solidify my plans for the next six months post graduation. Amusing, isn't it? Going to a convention to try to get a job instead of really going to be a nerd. XD But I'm glad I did it, I still had a lot of fun while networking and making connections~
And before the report: Mucho mucho thanks to
chobit001 and
kenshin_no_miko for being super cool and letting me stay with them! It's been a blast! :D
I arrived late Wednsday night to Freya's house! The drive was about two hours long and, seriously, it's the longest and farthest distance I have ever driven by myself. Wow, it was terribly tedious, but I managed to miss the traffic completely by driving at night and taking the 15 South, as per advice from one of my professors. The two of us hugged, chit-chatted, and giggled for a bit, she taught me random German, and we hit the hay fairly early so that we could wake up at around 4:30AM. XD Insane? YOU BET WE ARE! But it was worth it, we got parking in the convention center right next to the entrance! WOOT!
I spent the majority of that day wandering around the exhibit hall, trying to find out where everything was, then went upstairs and did the Portfolio Reviews. It was an interesting experience, I ran into two of my school friends, Danni and Autumn, there and met a lot of new and interesting people with artwork that ranged from good to 'why are you here?!' but really, the location was hot, the interviewers were impatient and I wasn't very interested in the companies that were there because they wanted 3D design and I'm more interested in 2D.
Networking wise, I made more connections that day in the Exhibit Hall. Peter S. Beagle and his publisher/editor, Connor Cochlan are two of the most wonderful people alive! After meeting them at various cons, we know each other by name now and they're interested in me about doing some work for them! There's a plan for a movie to be made based on one of Peter's books and they're looking for concept artists! This time, I had my promotional CDs and my resume to give them so they took them, looked through my portfolio and enthusiastically told me that they'll get in touch with me. They did tell me that they might not be able to pay me that much but I assured them it's not an issue. Right now, I need to gain a reputation more than anything, payment can come later, and they're both such wonderful, brilliant people that I'd gladly work for them for free and my reward from that would be their trust and friendship.
I also ran into Cynthia Cummens, an illustrator I met at ORC this year. She had a small table in the Artist Alley where her Star Wars and LOTR work was up. The two of us talked a lot, she looked over my portfolio and asked me for my contact info about perhaps doing sketch cards for New Line! WOO HOO! I happily gave her my promotional CD, so it looks like I might be able to get some freelance work! :D
One of the most important contacts I made was at the Nickelodeon booth, where I met the recruiter for the company. Due to them not really hiring at the moment, I couldn't give her my CD nor could she look over my portfolio, but she gave me some great advice and asked me to come again the next morning so she could give me her card. And the Nickelodeon booth had some AWESOME swag! :D
I also found two of my professors in the Exhibit Hall in the Fantasy/Illustrators section. One of them is Craig Elliot, www.craigelliotgallery.com, who is a concept artist for Disney. At the same time I saw him, two other people from my class were at his booth and we were joking that we should sit in and pretend we're having class. XD The three of us walked over to another teacher's booth and ran into Danni and Autumn again so it was this total Art Center invasion! MWA HAHAHAAHA! WE TAKE OVER!
Anyway, nothing much really happened that day, I met up with Freya again and we went back to her place where I finally met her parents. XD Her parents are really laid back and friendly, they made my stay with them very enjoyable! They remind me so much of my uncle and aunt in Washington so it was loads of fun! Freya and I decided to watch Two Towers with the actors' commentary but we were so tired that we fell asleep! XD
Once again, Freya and I arose bright and early at 4:30AM and drove to the convention center, where we got the EXACT SAME PARKING SPOT. Coincidently, Ben was parked near us and all that morning, played RENT as loud as he could. I will forever now associate the RENT soundtrack with trips because of this trip and the Boston trip. Oi vey. But Ben singing purposely off key to the soundtrack was HILARIOUS. And he gave us juice! Thanks, man!
Freya had to go volunteer at the con so I meandered about for awhile until I saw
scendan!!!!! Since the panel I wanted to go to didn't start til 10:30, I followed her and her friend to the Star Wars gathering! I finally took some pictures! XD

Aren't they all lovely? Such perty Jedis... err... Jedi... err... does 'Jedi' even have a plural form are they just all called Jedi?! :D

I also ran into Eurobeat Al over there too and got a hug! After that, I ran off to the Exhibit Hall where I met up with the recruiter from Nickelodeon again and got her card, woot! I wandered around some more, chatted with Peter and Connor again, chatted with Craig at his booth, then wandered off to the Portfolio Reviews again... then said screw it and wandered off to go to my panel.
Which turned out to be a reeeaaally good idea. The panel I went to was about short cartoons on Nickelodeon so the people there who were making shorts were also artists and designers currently at the company. After the panel was over, I went up to talk to the storyboard artist for Spongebob and he gave me a a spectacular review... then we were joined by a designer for Danny Phantom and Fairly OddParents, who also gave me a good review... soon enough, I WAS SURROUNDED BY ARTISTS! Boy was I a happy Jean. One of the women who was there was actually working for Family Guy so she asked me if I had anything to give her and I gave her my promotional CD! LUCKY! :D
Friday was also my most successful day in terms of networking because I was wearing my Art Center shirt! XD It was quite funny, if an industry person happened to glance at my shirt while we were talking, I seemed to score more points! Damn, I wish I had worn that shirt for all of the days at the con! XD I need to get me one of the bright orange ones so that I really stand out, I was wearing a gray one. XD
I went to a few more panels about pitching show ideas where I took notes, but aside from that, I wandered around the exhibit hall talking to industry people. I did run into Angela and Jenntrude for a moment, but I had to go because I had to go to another panel. Now this one was PURE enjoyment because...

NEIL GAIMAN WAS THERE!!!! The panel was for a book he had written called 'Stardust', which is a very good book. But I happen to have a huge crush on him at the moment because:
a. Sexy Brain
b. Sexy Accent
c. Sexy Looks (I dig the black, yo)
Would I totally marry him? YESIWOULDINAHEARTBEAT. But he's already married and has kids and is a lot older than me, so I fawned over him instead.

Oh Neil. <3

Where's Neil when you need him? (if anyone gets that, you get a cookie)
I was getting reeeeeaaaaally tired at this point but I was still happily bouncing along to different panels that I cannot remember at the moment, and meeting different people. One of the most interesting people I met on Saturday was the creator for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. XD I happened to stop by the Cartoon Network booth and met the producers for the show, where we talked about the show and the style that it's done and how I want to work for tv animation as well. And then, POOF, creator for the show stops by! Asks me for work to show him! Me= A HAPPY JEAN. I gave him a promotional CD so now I know I have work circulating within the industry! I also visited the booth for the Gnoman Workshop and the Entertainment Art Academy, where I was recognized by former classmates and teachers I never had but found me wandering in the vast halls of Art Center. XD It was pretty funny! I also ran into the person who interviewed me at school for High Moon studios! He totally remembered my name and gave me this BIG HUG. XD I think I also got Butch Hartman's autograph that day which made me VERY HAPPY. Butch Hartman's been my inspiration and main reference for really flat, 2D design with his character designs for Fairly Odd Parents and Danny Phantom.
I went to a Forest Ackerman panel, which was awesome... but aside from that and the Pitching Panel, I can't remember what else I did. XD Lame! LAME!! Anyway, I went back with Freya to her place that night, watched part of a really cool Japanese movie with her dad and hit the hay early once again.
Instead of sleeping when we got to the convention center, Freya really wanted to go to the 300 panel to see David 'Daisy' Wenham so I joined her in line at 5AM. Yes, there was indeed a line at 5AM, but we were fairly close to the front. But it was a fun line, the two of us chatted with some people in line, I doodled in my sketchbook, we played Hangman and watched the sunrise. Very, very pleasant... until the sun REALLY rose and it got REALLY HOT. But we were ushered in fairly quickly and Freya and I got REALLY AWESOME SEATS.

Look how close we are! This is with a slight zoom, but the two of us were sitting right behind the industry seating!

And there was a Mister Shiny Head in my pictures, I couldn't crop him out, but oh well! The movie itself is very interesting, it's based on a Frank Miller (he's the guy in the straw hat!) about the Greek myth where 300 Spartans beat an entire army of invading Persians.

I had no idea what the movie was about prior to the panel, except I knew it was based on a Frank Miller graphic novel considering Frank Miller's legendary in the graphic novel world. I did get rather excited that it was based on that myth though, it's one of my most favorite myths! Of course, if they wanted to be entirely accurate to the myth and the history, the actors would be naked and have male relations with each other... (i'm not kidding)

*sigh* Faramir <3 Someone gave Daisy a Faramir statue during the panel, it was quite nice!

I am looking forward to the movie now, the trailer was very well cut, it was the most interesting trailer for any movie that I've ever seen! They showed the trailer THREE TIMES during the course of the panel, I had NO complaints about that because it was REALLY COOL! Greek men waving pointing appendages of mass destruction, prancing about in leather codpieces! WOO! Flying heads! And boobies! ...I'm such a guy. *facepalm*

Lalalala~

Doesn't David really look like Sean Bean in this picture? XD
After the panel, Freya and I went right up to the stage and waved, yelling "DAISY! DAISY WENHAM!!!" And Daisy heard us and looked right us and waved back! Then we asked, "DAISY? WHY DOES MIRANDA CALL YOU DAISY?" And he answered, "It's been my nickname since I was little!" Gerald Butler and Frank Miller, who were standing next to him, took one look at us, looked at him and got this look of fiendish glee on their faces of, "Your nickname is DAISY?! We are SO MAKING FUN OF YOU LATER." Maybe two fans revealing that his nickname is Daisy in front of two manly men he worked with in a very manly men movie was not the best idea in the world. *adjusts halo and whistles innocently*
Freya and I muscled our way out of the room, then ran about the exhibit hall, doing the 'Find Appa' game from the Nickelodeon booth before splitting up. I went to some more pitching panels, and then the Nickelodeon new comedies panel, and then TADA, THE AVATAR PANEL which was in the same room. :D Lena, I completely blame this section on YOU.

Avatar cosplayers! I told Freya that she should cosplay as Katara. :D

The panelists for the Nickelodeon New Comedies panel. :D

The Comic Con logo, which usually has a drawing of an eye, replaced with Zuko's eye.

The panelists for the Avatar panel.

The writer and director of Avatar. Who sang the "It's a long long way to Bau Sing Sei" and showed us CONCEPT ART for the next season! ZUKO GOES ON A DATE XD

The voice actor for Sokka. He's quite cute. XD

The VP of Nickelodeon Animation. Who uhh... caught me sketching in line to get Sokka's and Zuko's autographs. And liked it. SQUEE.
I could talk about the panel... but I'm uploading the videos I took from it. :D It was very entertaining and the autograph session was pretty cool as well! :D The VAs also caught me sketching in line and told me that they liked it :D

The creators and actors of the new Nickelodeon puppet tv show, 'Mr. Meaty' who hung out with us and made jokes about how we're all here to see them instead of the Avatar guys. XD I joked back that they should all be meat-benders. MEAT BENDING! I think Sokka would like that. XD
I went to really wonderful writing panel that day about how to write for an animated TV show... but it felt like the sessions Mandy, Anne and I have where we sit around on someone's couch and chat about fic ideas. XD I managed to give some good input on a possible TV show and I met the writer of the Terra episodes for Teen Titans! It was very cool :D
I didn't go to the Masq that night, I was sad to miss such awesome sounding skits but I went over to the Marriot instead and joined in a HUGE sketch party. It was HUGE. There were artists from all over the place drawing in each other's sketchbooks and I quickly joined the fray after Danni and Autumn introduced me around. :D It was a lot of fun! I consistently drew dogs in other people's sketchbooks... like a cocker spaniel complaining that her martini wasn't diet and a chihuahua waiter lighting a cigarette on a birthday cake he was serving... loads of fun. And I met a hot sculptor. Autumn and Danni left around 1AM and were kind enough to drop me off at the Comfort Inn where I was staying with Jenny :D Jenny and I chillaxed, watched Trading Spaces, chatted, and soon went to bed.
Because my parents were leaving for Maui early Monday, I drove home on Sunday instead of going to the con. Plus, I wanted to see younger brother #1 who had just come back from Kenya because I had spent a good amount of time worrying irrationally about him because he was on a mission trip to a foreign country where he couldn't contact any of us. Although I went on the 5, I managed to beat the traffic by driving home early! Woo! And I saw ocean! Fairly easy drive, I feel more confidant than ever on the freeways now.
Whelp, I think that's about it~ I may upload videos soonish~ or not! ;D
And before the report: Mucho mucho thanks to
