KareKanooooo~~~!
I've been really getting into the KareKano manga lately... the story is just really good and I really love the different characters. Masami Tsuda has wonderful taste and it's all over her manga. Opera, classical music, indie music, different teas, European dishes and designs mixed with traditional Japanese!!! SQUEEE!!! Her taste is exceptional! Her art isn't that great though and there was a time I decided to stop buying the KareKano manga because the art just isn't that great but that didn't last long. KareKano is just THAT good of a story that the art of it just feels secondary. She does have great compisition and layout though so that kind of makes up for it, and she's drawing more in the later volumes instead of the beginning.
The best thing about KareKano are the characters but since there are so many, I'm just writing about the ones I like the most and the ones I kind of like but I have a strong opinion about. But I'll be lj cutting because of spoilers ~_^
Yukino Miyazawa: I really love Yukinon! If I was in her school, I'd totally try to be her friend. I love how she's this bratty person who tried to hide that she was imperfect XD She's really smart too so she understands people and problems quickly, and watching her character development is a whole lot of fun. =D
Soichiro Arima: I realize now that Soichiro is HIGH MAINTANENCE. Of course he's wonderfully sweet, intelligent, and quite adorable, but all those inner demons make him more than a little unstable. He's a great character though so I'm curious how much trouble his relationship with Yukino is when she discovers his dark side. It's volume 12 now and only the readers really know about how much deeper of a person Soichiro is. The other characters have little inklings here and there, but I think out of all the characters, Asaba understands him the most. I think that if I was a character in KareKano, I would've had a huge crush on Soichiro because of his image, but because I'm a reader, I know how difficult a relationship with him would be.
Hideaki Asaba: ASAPIN-CHAN~! I adore Asapin on many different levels. Sure he may be a flirt and a playboy, but his deeper side is what really makes him sexy. He hasn't had an easy life and he's distracted himself from his problems by going after girls, but he has this wonderful ability to see into even the most guarded hearts. He understands Arima better than anyone, maybe even Arima himself. Asapin probably has a very important part to play later on in the manga and more of his character will be revealed =D I really like his free spirit and the fact that he's a great artist and a creative individual. His backstory is going to be told in volume 13 so I can't wait for that to come out!
Maho Izawa: I love Maho, even if she was Bitchy McBitch in the first few volumes towards Yukino. But when I read her backstory in volume 10, I just can't help but love her. She's really mature yet she's naive in a lot of ways since she never had any real friends or really connected with anyone until she met her boyfriend, a 28 year old dentist whose name I am completely blanking on right now. She loves anything European or anything that has to do with historical books (like me!) and is probably a romantic at heart. ^_^ She looks out for the other girls too and is a fighter when strange men try to hit on the other girls, or gives them very wise advice when they're in trouble.
Tsubasa Shibahime: Another character who is HIGH MAINTANENCE. She actually reminds me of Rey the most out of all the characters. Her character went through the most changes as well: in the beginning, she was the antagonist when she discovered Arima fell in love with Yukino. Then she became the comic relief, often acting more animal than human, and then in vol 11 and 12, we actually saw the real Tsubasa for the first time. The real Tsubasa is very much like a child and she's refusing to really grow up because she's afraid of falling in love. When she gave her heart to Arima, Arima didn't notice it and fell for Yukino. Her father also had her heart, but her father fell in love with Kazuma's mother. So she's frightened of love since it always means getting her heart broken. She does grow up though, but she's not a very strong person, she was kicking and scream the entire way through the growing process because she was frightened even though she was surrounded by people who loved her and people who would willingly help her.
Kazuma Shibahime: If he was a real person, I'd probably fall in madly in love with him. Kazuma is strong, mature, and confident enough to make strong decisions that his mother doesn't worry about him. He's a talented singer and part of a group called Yin and Yang (whose band members are HILARIOUS!) but what makes Kazuma really special is that he's wide open about his feelings and his ability to heal people's hearts, like he did with Tsubasa. He's mature, rational, creative, and just soooooo adorable! He has the ability to make it on his own and come out being an even better person than he was before. And just by being himself, people willingly come to him to be healed and warmed by his sunny smile and easy going attitude. He and Arima both have a similar darkness, but Kazuma's is still very different because he takes the darkness and turns into inspiration, then he learns from it and solves his problem using his darkness. Arima just tries to deny the darkness in himself and pretends it doesn't exist despite the fact that it's growing stronger. Anyway, Kazuma is solid and strong, intelligent and wise, mature, yet incredibly sweet. *sigh*
Rika Sena: Rika is the character that you tend to forget is there, but there is just something about her that's really special. She's the sweet, motherly figure of the group, the kind of girl who all the normal boys want to have for their girlfriend and she'd make nummy lunches and scarves for them. But besides that, she is incredibly strong and will act on her feelings if a) the girls misbehave too much (the other girls are kind of scared of her) or b) someone picks on her friends. She apparently nearly killed someone while in kindergarten because that person was bullying Aya's older brother Kyo, who she secretly has a crush on. Although that story is portrayed as comedy in the manga, you have to admit that she's pretty strong!! Rika is also the most observative member of the group but she keeps a lot her opinions to herself. I think she's also the only one who really looked into Asaba's heart, and when he caught her, he gave her a little smirk, warning her never to do it again. She's also incredibly good with her hands and can make anything look beautiful. Tsubasa's father is a clothing designer and when he saw her designs, he told her to come talk to her when she graduates. Rika's very modest and thought he was just being nice when he was actually serious about taking her under his wing. ^O^ I really really like Rika a lot, she's sweet, responsible, quiet, sensitive and creative, but she's modest to the point that she feels like she's an average person in her group of incredibly extrodinary individuals. Yet, her friends see the things that she creates and design, then shake their heads and say that she's not average AT ALL.

You'd want to be friends with bratty Yukino? are you sure? XD;;
hmm.. I never did like KareKano, mostly because I felt that it wasn't a good representation of the way intelligent people think... but some of the background characters sound cool :O
