Christine Lavin *_*
Sep. 26th, 2004 12:10 amI went to the best concert EVER last night. No, it didn't involve four hot guys playing instruments, or four girls playing instruments, no singing in Japanese or in Asian languges involved. There was a fifty year old woman armed with only her guitar, wind chimes, and a wireless voice synthesizer... and it was awesome and incredibly hysterical XD It just goes to show that sometime simple things really are the best. XD
On her website it said that knitters should come an hour early to sit and knit with her, so I grabbed my needles and my Gryffindor book scarf and came early. The concert was in North Pasadena inside a small elementary school auditorium, but it was nice to be there and the neighborhood is incredibly pretty so I got to enjoy looking at pretty houses while the sun set as I drove there. Anyway, the guy Ed, who probably wasn't even in charge of the whole thing was incredibly crabby and pretty much barked at me saying that he can't let me in until Christine herself came by, saw the note and was so happy to find a knitter that I was allowed to go in. After she set up a few things for her CDs, we went to a small teachers' lounge and knitted. It wasn't long before we were joined with many ladies with their knitting, and one lady who was crocheting XD
Cookies were passed around, as well as gossip, and it was a lot of fun to sit around knitting. Everyone had such gorgeous yarn so I felt kind of dinky with my red and yellow acrylic XD I was the youngest one, Christine even thought I was in high school XD and there were quite a few Jewish ladies who were cheating on Yom Kippur XD One of the joked that we looked like a bunch of Jewish girls sitting around and knitting so I had to follow up with that, "Yeah, especially ME!" XD Lil Korean Jewish girl! XD
Anyway, I left the room at some point to check if Anne, Mandy, Emily and Anne's family were here and found that they saved me a seat so I went back to knit some more and get my things until the concert began. Ohhhh it was hilarious!! A lot of her songs are incredibly hilarious and her serious ones just hit my heart =) So whenever I'm down, I end up posting her lyrics or listening to her songs and I feel that there's someone symphathising with me or I get cheered up right away. My favorite song she sang that night was a song called "Wind Chimes" about her trip to Hawaii and how beautiful it was and how enchanting the wind chimes were... until when she tried to sleep. XD To make it even better, she attached three different sizes of wind chimes to her guitar while singing that song!! XD
Another thing she did was to crown Mr. Pasadena 2004 as a joke while she sang another song 'You Look Pretty Good for Your Age'. She did this with a spelunking lamp on her head and did an imitation of a lighthouse XD Two guys were chewing gum so she went, "GIVE IT HERE!" took the gum, and stuck it to her guitar!!! XD After that, she got volunteers up on stage (including Anne's dad!!) to sing 'Sensitive New Age Guys' with her!
Many more wonderfully funny things happened and I can honestly say that this was the most FUN concert I have ever been to. Watching a fifty year old lady stand for about 3 hours, sing along with her songs, participating in harmonies, and then watching her twirl batons and throw glowsticks (I'm not kidding) into the crowd makes me hope that I can be as energetic and funny as she is when I'm fifty. Anyone interested in her music can visit her website at www.christinelavin.com. And I must warn that it's not for the closed minded for the faint of heart. Folk songs can be very political, but in the end, music is music so just enjoy her other songs about 'Harrison Ford' or 'Piranah Women of the Avocado Jungle of Death' if politics is not for you. XD But I do recomend her song called 'The Piper' which is a wonderful song about the evils of society today (crime, teenage pregnancy, etc). Other favorites are 'Attainable Love', 'Castlemaine', 'Yonder Blue', 'Getting in Touch with my Inner Bitch', 'Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind', etc. I just love her stuff!!
