Dear Neighbors on the Other Side of the Street,

Tomorrow is Street Cleaning Day. We need to park on that side of that street. All of us. And some of you jerks forgot to put your trash cans away or at least off of the street. While I will refrain from wishing that whatever happens in Night Vale on street cleaning day on you, I do hope all of those who forgot get really gushy and loud and super farty diarrhea. The kind that you can hear from outside of the bathroom. that lasts for what feels like hours but probably wasn't that long.

Also, you suck at being considerate neighbors.

Just made some of these today and I have to say, they taste pretty darn good! I may have cooked mine a wee bit too long so they weren't as fudgy as I hear they can be. Recipe from here.

Makes 16 two-inch squares

Ingredients

Olive oil spray
2/3 cup mild honey, such as clover or orange blossom
1/3 cup natural, unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup white whole wheat flour
1/4 teaspoon aluminum-free baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large egg, at room temperature
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray an 8" square pan with olive oil. Set aside.

Place the honey in a large glass measuring cup. Microwave on high until the honey is runny and just bubbling, 45 to 60 seconds. Add the cocoa and stir with a fork until well combined. Let cool to room temperature.

Meanwhile, place the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Whisk until well combined.

In a large bowl, combine the applesauce, oil, egg and vanilla. Whisk together until well blended. Add the honey and cocoa mixture, then whisk until smooth. Add the flour mixture to the liquid mixture and stir until no traces of flour remain. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan.

Bake until the surface looks dry around the edges of the pan and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs clinging to it, about 25 minutes. Do not overbake. Place the pan on a cooling rack and let cool completely before slicing into 16 two-inch squares. Store the brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

I mentioned previously that I had been dieting which is why there have been so many 'diet food' recipes on this LJ lately, but I haven't mentioned anything else so I thought I'd write down what I'm doing because it seems to be working.

Food
Currently, I'm trying to only eat 1230 calories a day and recording the food and the amounts with the MyFitnessPal app for iPhone. I'm also following the "80/20" rule where 80% of the time I eat healthy food and then 20% I eat whatever I want. Some people do this daily but I save up my 20% and have a cheat day on Saturday. It makes me look forward to the end of the week and I've been spending Saturdays hanging out with friends so it's just more enjoyable. :)

I've also stopped eating carbs for breakfast. It's not easy and I love eating rice and breads and stuff but it's working so far. I think this was the hardest for me to give up and once in awhile, I do fail, but eh. Once in awhile failing is okay. XD

Exercise
Lately, I have been doing the Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred while alternating it with her Yoga Meltdown dvd to help with my flexibility. I just finished Level 1 yesterday, I still can't do push ups very well (still doing knee push ups but at least I can do them), but I can do all the other advanced exercises without feeling like I'm going to die so I'm ready to move on. I also have to increase the weights from 2 lbs to 3lbs when I move on, then finally to 5lbs when I hit level 3.

What I like about the DVDs is that they are SHORT. I hate working out, I hate spending hours at a gym or running around a track, etc, so this is perfect for me. They are not easy though, I'm usually drenched in sweat and breathing hard by the end. You don't stop moving for the entire 30 minutes, you go from one exercise to the next and Jillian Michaels is relentless (and sometimes you just want to punch her) but it is working.

Here's the proof: I found a guide online that suggested I take measurements all over the thickest parts of my body and record them, then compare them to the end result. So far, I have lost 6.5" all over my body and 4.2lbs total! Not bad for Level 1! :D

Basically this recipe with a few modifications.

1 cup oats (I used old fashioned)
1 banana
Raisins (I used 3 small boxes of Sun maid raisins)
2 tablespoons of chunky peanut butter
Splash of vanilla extract

1. Peel banana and combine all ingredients in bowl, just smush them all together with your hands.
2. Make little circles with the dough and press them onto an oiled baking sheet (these are non-rising/expanding cookies).
3. Bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes (mine were a little well done at 18) or until they turn golden brown.

Serving size: 2 cookies
1 serving is 147 calories

Edit: This is version 2, added parts of this recipe to make it work better.

Recipe from here. I'm skeptical but intrigued!

RECIPE for 1 medium pizza (8 slices):
Crust:
- 1 cauliflower (a smallish to medium sized one, not one the size of your head)
- 1/2-3/4 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp of dried basil
- 1/2 tsp crushed garlic

Toppings (up to you but I did a veggie medley):
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 1/2 cup mushrooms
- 1/2 green bell pepper
- 1/2 red onion

WHOLE PIZZA = 616 calories
1 SLICE = 77 calories

DIRECTIONS:
1. Stick baking sheet or pizza stone in oven, preheat to 450 degrees.
2. Shred cauliflower in a food processor
3. Microwave in a bowl for 4 min
4. Dump out cauliflower on a tea towel and let it cool.
5. Wrap cauliflower in tea towel and squeeze as much water out of it as possible, then put back into a bowl.
6. Mix in about 1/2 cup of cheese, save rest for topping
7. Crack the egg and mix all ingredients together
8. Take out pan from oven and spray pan with PAM and make a nice base of cauli-cheese crust
9. Bake in oven 8-12 minutes
7. Then take out crust, top with sauce and toppings
8. Place back in oven for another 5-10 minutes

I'm dieting again and trying to avoid eating rice for one meal (this is really hard T_T) so this recipe was A WIN!

Ingredients
1 mashed banana
2 tablespoons of egg whites or 2 whole eggs

Other stuff (optional)
Pinch of salt
Pinch of cinnamon
Splash of vanilla extract
1 spoonful of flour (to keep dough from getting too runny)

1. Mash banana liberally.
2. In separate bow, whisk the eggs/egg whites.
3. Combine ingredients, add in extra ingredients at this time.
4. Heat up a fry pan with just a bit of oil. Spoon dough into silver dollar sized pancakes and flip when bubbles appear around the ends.
5. Drizzle on a bit of honey and enjoy!

Makes about 5-6 small pancakes, total calories going up to about 250. :D

Edit: Making pancakes with just 2 tablespoons of egg whites barely makes 3 small pancakes. probably better to use something closer to 1/4 cup egg whites xD

I offered to make dinner for Mother's Day and was turned down because we have so much food in the house that it was better to eat the leftovers. But since I had a good recipe idea, I thought I'd jot it down here. This is a good, light spaghetti recipe with a bit of a kick that combines these two recipes: Spaghetti with Sausage and Torn Chicken Arrabiata

Was also going to serve this with a side either asparagus or green beans. :)

Ingredients
8 ounces hot Italian turkey sausage links
1 onion
3 cloves of garlic
a handful of fresh basil
a glug of olive oil
1 tsp of chilli flakes
1 tsp of dried oregano
1 tbsp of tomato purée
1 tin of chopped tomatoes (400g)
chicken stock (100ml)
1 pkg of whole wheat angel hair pasta

1. Preheat broiler.
2. Peel and finely dice the onion and mince the garlic.
3. Rip the basil.
4. Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the onion and garlic to fry gently until softened, then add the chilli flakes and oregano.
5. Stir in the tomato purée then pour in the chopped tomatoes and stock before bringing to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
6. Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat; drain.
7. Arrange sausage on a small baking sheet. Broil sausage 5 minutes on each side or until done. Remove pan from oven (do not turn broiler off). Cut sausage into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Arrange slices in a single layer on baking sheet. Broil sausage slices 2 minutes or until browned.
8. Chuck the basil into the sauce.
9. Drain the pasta and toss in to the sauce. Done!

All things considered, 2012 was pretty damn nice. Made new friends, met cool people, tried new things, signed up for social networkings like Tumblr, learned new things, drew a ton of stuff, got paid moneys.

In 2013, I vow to:
-Be an awesome cat owner
-Draw more things and have fun doing it. I focused a lot on technique for the past few years so now it's time to focus on experimenting and trying different thing.
-Try new things, not just in art but in life
-Practice healthier things, like not eating so much cake or fried foods and do body moving things

So yeah, that was eloquent. :D

...saw many friends that I hadn't seen in awhile.

...saw a beautiful animated short film that I never expected to actually get a chance to watch in person.

...saw the King of Camelot (he walked right past me at the movie theater).

...got hugged by an animation legend.

...celebrated for 4 MOAR YEARS in the car with a good friend. <3

...saw a shooting star on the way home.

Hello.

Saturday morning is Jean's Cartoon Time. The one morning of the entire week where I happily get up early to catch the latest and best tv animation, and with my cat, laptop, and bowl of cereal, feel once again like I am 8 years old and don't have to worry about adult things such as unemployment, or the earth being slowly burnt to a crisp. To interrupt this sacred time with your pamphlets and your condescension (disguised in the form of 'helping people') will not endear you to me. In fact, it will have quite the opposite effect, whereas before I would've politely opened the door and listened to you and then told you in a calm voice, "thank you for your time, but please do not come back since I disagree completely with your institution", interrupting Jean's Cartoon Time will bring forth body slams against the door and shouts of, "GO THE FUCK AWAY YOU MINDLESS BRAINWASHED ASSHOLE!" and loud suggestions of where exactly you can stuff your pamphlets.

Thank you.
bluejeans07: (Batman and Sons- Nerdy Babs)
I happen to really love this intro. Yes, it's cheesy but it had some awesome music and the best animation you'd see in a terrible 90's cartoon.

However... I didn't know that Japan got a different animated intro when the show aired over there.

And they didn't just get one... they got another one too!

The animation in both intros is so much more awesome... it makes the American intro so bleh in comparison!! I don't even care that I can't tell who the X-men are fighting (some random alien race?) or that some of their moves are weird (since when did Professor X shoot blue energy blasts from his hands?!), because it just looks so awesome. XD CRY FOR THE MOOOOOON!

Incidentally, I'm dressing up as Jubilee for Halloween. Pew pew!

Up for ref. SOUNDS SO YUMMY.
bluejeans07: (Batman and Sons- Nerdy Babs)
Originally, I planned to take a break from taking more classes until next year, and then Tron Mai stepped up to take over Rad Sechrist's story class after Rad moves to Nor Cal. I can't seem to decide now and early reg is happening soon... argh...

Pros:
IT'S TRON FREAKING MAI. HE'S AWESOME.
No, really, he's awesome. I have proof of his awesome. He came on the last day of the story class and gave critiques, a brief lecture about his process, and his plans for this class. Tron wants to focus on each individual student's needs and help them get the foundations of a portfolio. He also wants to help create characters and help lead characters into a story. So awesome!
He would be my oasis of intelligent sanity because I know I'm going to be wading through some crap at the end of the year.
Have I mentioned he's Tron freakin' Mai?

Cons:
I've been taking classes all year, not to mention last year. This summer was insane as well, a load of work came my way and I had to balance taking two classes on top of that. It's pretty much time for a break.
Fall/winter gets really busy for me, family wise. First, it's everyone's birthday, and then it's Chusuk, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's in that order. Being the oldest being with estrogen, I'm forced to help out... a lot.
Work wise... yeah, all the deadlines are tight and are going to be the fall/winter season. -_-
I'm not sure if I can keep up with the homework with everything going on. :/

...it's still Tron Mai though... I really want to take the class... but I'm not sure if I'd be able to keep up... T_T

I don't really buy a lot of clothes, usually I go through quite a few years not buying anything new to wear at all until I either have an occasion to buy something for or if I really need a wardrobe update. This year, I really did need a wardrobe update and ended up buying quite a lot of pieces because my needs and tastes changed simultaneously. I started working conventions a whole lot more and realized that I probably should be dressed a bit more nicely at these places instead of my usual jeans, cartoon t-shirt and hoodie. I was networking a lot more and meeting more people that I now have a professional relationship with, and when I showed up to a nice but casual party wearing my panda hoodie... yeah even someone like who doesn't care that much about appearance was more than a little embarrassed.

I'm also trying to dress a bit nicer when I go to work related things. It's still really casual, but it's not as old jeans that I had since high school and t-shirty as it used to be. I'm trying to change it up a bit more, wear more skirts, try out tops in different shapes, and experiment with my hair a bit more. Lately, I've been really liking putting my hair up in various buns since it's been so hot and the best way to get hair off of my neck is to tie it up. I've also tried to do more side braids but my hair haaateees being braided and slips out all the time, much to my sadness.

So now I'm going through my closet and weeding through my clothing, gathering them up in bags to take over to the Goodwill or donate them to the high school tennis team to sell at their yearly garage sale. Some of these pieces, even though I've had them for years (I even found a skirt that I started wearing in middle school), are still in pretty nice condition. If I had more time to sew, I'd probably like to keep more of these and turn them into bags but I sadly do not. Anyway, I'm happy to have more closet space~

Womanthology Space: Alien has been announced on PREVIEWS!

I think I need to run over to the comic book store and buy the Previews book BECAUSE HOLY CARP THERE IS MY NAME THERE IN INK THAT I WORKED ON THIS! Please pick up this issue and all the other issues of Womanthology: Space, it will show IDW that this women in comics are wanted, launch a lot of careers, hopefully get other ones started and perhaps after Space is done, there will be a chance to have MORE Womanthology stories! :D

And this summer still continues to be Crazypants. I'm home from Comic Con but still am SO TIRED from it. Everything about that convention is exhausting... still fun, still enjoy going and seeing friends and earning a little money and getting network contacts, but still... so exhausting. It was made even more exhausting due to the increased security and the sudden onslaught of fundies who were determined to save the souls of Twilight fans, comic book fans, and autograph hounds.

It did cause awesome moments like this to happen though:
tumblr_m7h0r7hYtU1qbsbu8o2_250

tumblr_m7h0r7hYtU1qbsbu8o3_250

Not to mention the awkward moment where I walked past one of them with this behemoth of an artbook in my arms. He looked down at the book, then straight at me and mentally telegraphed the message, "THAT BOOK WILL CAUSE YOUR SOUL TO BURN IN HEEEEEEEELL." I looked right back at him and mentally shot back, "THISBOOKISSOMUCHMOREAWESOMETHANYOURSIGNYOUDON'TEVENKNOOOOOOOOOW! Yeah, I'm full of the witty retorts.

Also, I've been posting quick comic scrawls on my tumblr: http://jeandrawsstuff.tumblr.com/

Currently, it's the Adventures of Handsome Cowboy. I have about 4 more comic scrawls left so I'll be posting them in groups of two today and tomorrow :D
