The State of the Jean Address
Nov. 10th, 2010 11:37 amSo Nick did an lj entry about himself. Then C did one, then Amandr did one. So I'm doing what any other social monkey would do and follow suit! XD
I'm Jean, but I've also answered to Jeanie, Mean Jean the Dancing Machine, and Jeanaffer in the past. I'm 26, I live in LA with my parents and my cat. Yeah, I live at home still (I did move out for college though), and it's actually a huge relief. Rent is expensive in CA, and since I work in animation, jobs are sporadic and have a tendency to either not pay well, or not last very long, or all of the above. I'm lucky that my parents live in a good location where the everything is a fairly good driving distance.
Currently, I'm unemployed and I've been unemployed for almost over a year aside from sporadic freelance jobs and conventions. The recession had caused the studio I worked with for almost two years to lay me off and jobs have been hard to come by. I'm still fairly new in the industry and while my goal is to someday be awesome in the action/adventure genre in animation, I don't have the experience to be considered. However, I do forsee my unemployment status ending in the hopefully near future, there lately have been more jobs that I'm more eligible to be considered for so I've been sending out portfolios, resumes, and the like.
I haven't been idle during my months of unemployment though! So far, I've joined Girls Drawin Girls, done two gallery shows, three conventions, wrote/drew/colored a bunch of random comics, learned how to create resin necklaces with my artwork in them, designed a t-shirt, put together a sketchbook, enroll in an awesome storyboard class, met more awesome artists, and basically kept myself busy. I learned that I really like storytelling and thinking about storytelling in visual media consumes my brain. I also learned that I'm not as strong as a draftsman as I'd like to be and lately, I've been drawing a page of hands per day just to improve how to draw hands.
I'm currently writing a story called 'The Old Soldier' that was inspired by a dream I had on the last night of Long Beach Comic Con. It's going to be a comic and I'm excited about the story itself and how I'm going to do it. I'm not terribly good about posting stuff online on my art journal
bluejeanius but I'm going to try harder with this one.
Fandom wise, I'm not very active although I love reading fanfics and seeing fanart. Current fandoms that I'm reading fics for are World's Finest (Superman/Batman slash), Merlin, and Torchwood. I tend to like sitting on the edge and watching fandom interact with each other, and then I write and draw about it in a comic. I also like to draw fanart but my twisted sense of humor often gets in the way of drawing anything remotely serious so it ends up being very silly.
TV wise, I watch a lot of animated shows because hey, it's my business and my obsession. The shows I'm watching currently are Adventure Time, Regular Show, Sym-Biotic Titan, Batman: Brave and the Bold, and Fish Hooks. Yeah, all shows on Cartoon Network at the moment (except for Fish Hooks), these shows are wonderfully creative, well designed, and extremely entertaining. Sym-Biotic Titan is just a FEAST for my eyes, the backgrounds are so beautiful, the art is just amazing. The story pacing can be a little slow and the characters are a bit too set in their archetypes, but I really like where they're going with this show in general. I'm really looking forward to the new Young Justice animated show and a preview will air on Cartoon Network on November 26th!
In live action tv, I'm watching Merlin, QI, How I Met Your Mother, and Glee. All of these shows are cracky funtimes! Also, Neil Patrick Harris has been in half of these shows, and also in Batman: Brave and the Bold.
I also listen to a lot of BBC Radio, all thanks to
twirlynoodle. My favorites are radio dramas that can be found on BBC Radio 7, Elaine Paige's radio show on Radio 2 that's all showtunes, and comedies and documentaries found on BBC Radio 4. I'm currently making my way through Sherlock Holmes BBC radio dramas that I found at my library, Clive Merrison is HOLMES!
Ummm... I think that's it. Yeah. Ask me any questions and I'll do my level best to answer them.
