SO! [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge and [livejournal.com profile] amand_r had a cooking battle... sort of (I keep thinking Amand_r won because hers looked tastier but then that wasn't the point of the battle... or was it?) Anyway, there were lots of pictures of food and cooking and it looked like fun!

And today was Mom's birthday so I decided I'd cook dinner for her. :D Anyway, photo heavy with pictures of food and practically naked Japanese men.

Today's menu!

Sesame seared tuna
Lime zest mashed potatoes
Korean style tomato and cucumber salad

Gather ingredients for marinade! Here we have apple vinegar, sesame oil, and soy sauce in a reused Propel bottle. Yeah. Useful though!

Cat watching you cook is optional.

The marinade is one part apple vinegar, one part soy sauce, with just a dash of sesame seed oil for flavor. Just keep tasting it till it tastes just right and then put in the tuna sashimi.

Cover those suckers up with some cling wrap and stick it in the fridge! I let them marinade for a good two hours and they really soaked up the delicious flavors.

Now, what to do while the tuna marinades? How about READING A MAGAZINE?

What? I read it for the articles!

I can totally read words... on that page...

Oh look, an article! In a language I can't read... (I can read it a little)

Wait... what?! O_O

This guy is so SERIOUS BIZNESS! And his chest is so... RIPPED! HAR HAR!

Okay, now that's just ridiculous.

So is random white lady with a very strange taste in head gear...

Wait, what? It's been two hours already? Time to flip the tuna!

Nom nom nom, very nicely marinaded. Put the flipped tuna back in the fridge!

I let it sit for about an hour more before I took it out again and drained the liquids. Then, the tuna was seasoned with some salt and black pepper.

Before being packed with sesame seeds, wrapped tightly in cling film and then back in the fridge. This will get the sesame seeds to stick more firmly onto the tuna.

Time for side dishes!

AAAUUGHH AUUUUUGGHHH!! OH NO, VEGETABLES! LOOK AWAY, [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge LOOK AWAAAAY!

Handy dandy Hello Kitty potato peeler! For peeling potatoes and cukes! Definitely not as cool as Pierre, Amand_r's awesome peeler, but it does the job! Besides, it's cute. <3

I don't have a zester so I used a cheese grater to get the zest off the lime. It still works!

Boiled a pot of salted water on the stove, then put in some chopped potatoes for MASHED POTATOES~ Nom nom nom! My pot might have been too big but eh.

When potatoes are mash-ready, drain and then put back into the warm pot. Lube up the potatoes with some olive oil and mash away! Pretend it's someone you hate while you mash! HA! Take that Rush Limbaugh! *mashmashmash*

Season with salt, black pepper, and lime zest. The lime makes it taste light and fresh that I turn my nose up at gravy when it comes to these potatoes.

Time for salad!

Chop up half an onion, scallions, and garlic, and put it together in a bowl. Pour hot water over the mixture to take the sharpness away from the taste and let it soak for a little bit, then drain. Add in shaved chicken essence, salt, pepper, regular vinegar, sesame oil, and sugar, just taste it to make sure the flavor is right.

Add in peeled cucumber slices and tomatoes and mix it all up for a nice, light, yummy salad! OM NOM NOM NOM!

Finally, heat up a flat frying pan with a bit of oil. When the pan is hot, flash fry the tuna for a few seconds, using tongs to flip them. Let them sit for about 5 minutes and then slice them!

FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD GET IN MY BELLEH! White wine goes very nicely with fish. :D And we ate it with rice because we're so damn Asian. Atom also got some tuna too.

So it wasn't awesome swordfish or weird German mustard sauce thing, but hey! Food! Food is good!! NOM!
