I'm at the point of being so weird, it's normal

So the assignment for Advanced Rendering today is to design a character with one of your most interesting quirks. Since I had just finished talking to Josie over Halloween costumes (Jem and the Holograms, anyone want to join in? *pokes Lynleigh and Angela* XD) I thought it would be fun to design a character who cosplays... and make them really really weird. But I was having trouble coming up with the even more weirdness so I asked the class to help me out.

"Why do you do all this?"
I like to sew and I like the character. I need to give it up though, I have no time for the level of detail and attention I want to put into it! Plus, it's expensive.

"Nooo, don't give it up, it would make me sad if you gave it up!"
Yeah, I'd be sad too... but I just can't seem to give it up because it's a lot of fun to do =X

"Hey, if you could, would you wear a costume everyday?"
O_O; NO!!!

"Okay, now we're getting somewhere, why? I mean, if I had like 365 costumes, I'd wear one everyday!!!"
I don't have 365 costumes for one thing. Second thing, my costumes are made out of expensive materials and dry cleaning and laundry is already a pain as it is!! They're not easy to get into either, there's wigs, make-up, tights, taping up your feet, etc. that goes into putting a costume on. That would take time that I don't have, thanks to this school. Besides, oil painting in SATIN?? NO. There's a time and a place for everything and dressing up in costumes only happen for conventions where I can control the environment that my costumes are in.

"You know Jean, you're stuck inside a box right now."
I am?

"You're too attachted to your logistics of your hobby so you can't really be weird about it. You just can't see that what you do is weird."
I know that what I do is weird and my way of life isn't normal for people, but it's normal for me so I can rationalize it.

"See? Exactly. There's gotta be more than just liking the character, or liking sew."
Oookay... I can't think of any... x_x;

i agree with your classmates. don't logiticize it. imagine you were not you? and then think "man, cosplay is weird. why do i do it?" because... like besides just a hobby... but why this hobby of dressing up? make the character like obsessive compulsive.. always having to do something? lol... or like, multiple personality disorder.

man.. i dunno, mental diseases really aren't something to make fun of.. but you know what i mean :X or do i even know what YOU mean? LOL.. i'm so confused.

a costume every day.. well i wore a costume every day for 6 months at one and it made me half crazy.

See, the fun thing about cosplaying is the same thing that makes Halloween fun: It's Not Every Day. Cosplay is fun because you get to dress up in clothing you normally wouldn't wear in public – and no one will think you're strange because of it! (Well, not really. Con goers won't think you're strange, but the people from the Jehova's Witnesses convention will definitly think you're strange...) If you dressed up everyday it would not longer be something unique and special – it would just be something you did everyday. Does any of that make sense?

Oh! Did you get your computer back yet? What's the status?

Yes my computer is back!! Everything is working well and I'm restocking my mp3s as we speak! I'm getting an iPod next week too, but the tablet drivers don't want to install anymore =X I can't install Photoshop 5 either. I'll be coming home for the weekend, can we get together so I can get a few programs from you? Thanks!
