Skimmed through it, good article and interesting, non-biased, but a bit negative about lemons. Go read it! They also mention fanfiction.net and Sugar Quills. Also has J.K. Rowling's own input about Harry Potter fanfiction (which is a sentance from her official lawyer).
My opinion about fanfiction
As a writer myself, I am a stickler to detail and try to hold true to the actual intent of the stories. The stories I read also are close to cannon, or are written well and are entertaining without being cannon. Fanfiction in general I think are wonderful outlets for creativity and for practice for writing. It gets people reading, which is very important, and it makes rusty gears in their brain turn.
Only fanfiction I am against are the ones that
1. Non-tasteful self inclusion that involves having GODLY powers (been there, done that, am disgusted)
2. Very very bad grammer, it burns I tell you!
My book has not come yet! I nearly succumbed to the temptation of running over to Borders and buying another copy -_- Fanfiction stopped me and saved me from spending my money! See? Fanfiction is GOOOD XD
