Death Eater Painting

So there was a major plot point for one of my characters last night and after not being able to play it for awhile, I finally took a break from finals, sat down, and PAINTED. Crazy Jean, no? Painting for FUN after painting for SCHOOL. Anyway, the plot point involved one of my characters painting a portrait of the Death Eater who burned her pub and originally, I thought it would be cool to do various posts of her painting process so I saved the painting at different times. Then I changed my mind because painting for six hours straight with no break made me really tired and I just posted the first tep and the last step. But I still have all these picture files so I'm posting them here. ;D

I began with a 2x3 piece of whiteness in Photoshop. Using my tablet and a brush tool, I toned it a light umber, then sketched it in with an opaque brush. This is how I begin every painting, toning a canvas and sketching, so it's not a different painting process for traditional or a digital painting.

Created a new layer and using some reference, I blocked in the background. I was thinking a lot about colors but I found this amazing picture of a house on fire that I used for reference and took the colors directly from that.

Created a new layer, started blocking in the shadows of the figure and worked a bit on the hood of the cloak. I didn't want the cloak to be black like a sillhoutte, but that blue came directly from the reference and it worked out great. Blue and orange are complimentary colors after all! And the blue is slightly desaturated so that the orange can be a lot brighter.

Created a new layer for the skull and blocked it in. I was using a tattoo of a skull for reference, as well as a picture a real skull at that angle.

Created yet another new layer and worked on the light side, shaping the skull and tightening the lines. Jean started to render even though Jean HATES rendering.

Created a new layer for the eyes specifically. Then did another layer for the lighting effects and finished it off! Really, it only sounds easy.
