World Con

I really enjoyed World Con, it was quiet, contained and pretty much one of the most well organized convention I have *ever* experienced! Everyone got a huge convention guide, at least two maps, some advertisement flyers (of course), and a pocket convention guide that had everything. The pocket guide really impressed me, my friends and I dropped the rest of the stuff off at the car but all of us kept our pocket guides which turned out to be really handy. Every con needs a pocket guide.

The best thing about World Con I thought was how it was geared towards books. Mostly SF books but fantasy books as well and I found a HUGE collection of artbooks that are from SF and Fantasy, like the latest Spectrum, Brothers Hildenbrandt books, and lots and lots of Froud. I was very damn close to buying one since it's a con, no sales tax! What stopped me though was that I couldn't decide which one I wanted X_X One of the other best things about World Con that the art show and the art gallery at the con were full of professional artists, not fan artists. There was quality artwork to look at and learn from, like storyboards from 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'Harry Potter', etc.

The panels were pretty interesting too, the first panel we went to was about how to kill off a character. I had to give Mandy and Anne an amused grin since I was sitting in the panel dressed as Death from Sandman. Mandy was my Delirium! :D Unfortunetly, the art panels only managed to annoy me because the 'Future of SF and Fantasy Art' panel was very anti-digital art. It doesn't matter to them that the future and the present IS digital art, they just dislike it. Sheesh, they can't see the fact that digital art is a _medium_, it's the same as when artists switched from tempra paint to oil paint! And these people totally did not consider future artists and audiences in this panel at ALL, it was more the 'We Hate Digital Art' panel than anything. I went to the 'Conceptual Art for Movies' panel because I thought Syd Mead was going to be there since he was listed in the program guide... but he decided not to show up. He was AT the CON though so I'm like... NOOOOOO I COULD'VE MET SYD MEAD EXCEPT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW HE LOOKS LIKE! ;_; He's apparently a very private guy though... so it goes. I wanted to talk to him about art stuff and we would've had ACCD in common and and I like 'Blade Runner' and 'Gundam', all of which HE designed. I was a sad Jean. Panel was kind of interesting though except I fell asleep partway through since I was really tired...

The best panel was probably the humor panel, because Peter S. Beagle was on the board. It was funny. :D Peter didn't recognize me this time around though, it was the black make up. XD I don't have any pics of me in that outfit because we all forgot cameras, but it's easy to put on again, so maybe I'll wear it again sometime. :D I got recognized pretty often, there were moments when people went "deeeeaaaaath" to me in the halls. XD It's one of those moments when you can consider "You look like Death!" to be a compliment.

And of course PRANCING PONY PLAYERS!! Their show was wonderfully funny and I couldn't stop laughing until tears came out of my eyes (bad for black make up!) And there was a sing along! And and big rings! And they converted the orc into a hobbit! <3<3<3

Masq was all right, beautiful costumes but there wasn't enough 'performance' I thought. There were notable exceptions like Spamish Inquisition, Dancing with Celebs from the Stars, Foster's Home... but everything else was very catwalk. The halftime show made me laugh because it was so BAD. Moulin Rouge in Spaaaaaaceeee (say that in the tone of a Buck Rogers announcer and you'll pretty much get the gist of what the halftime show was like). Favorite skit was definetely Spamish Inquisition, Monty Python love!

I don't know if I'll go to World Con again if it comes back to L.A. I had a good time but it was expensive. The stuff in the dealers room was definetely buyable but the price was the same as if I bought the same thing at Borders. The only thing I really wanted and knew I couldn't find if I looked for it was the 'Ministry of Silly Walks' t-shirt, but that was also expensive and I would've cut it up to make it more fitted. I still kind of want it though... :X

Anyway, that's the long and short of it! Back to crafty stuffs! :D

That was a very good summary of Worldcon. Thank you for bringing up more of the positive aspects that my gloss of the con missed. :)

Worldcons are cheaper if you do one of two things.

1) Sign up when it's a bid or has just won. (For example, if I want to go to Denver, now would be the best time to start considering it.)

2) Volunteer for the con! Then they FEED you. And possibly get you crash space. Next time it's in MA, I'll likely be on staff for it at the rate I'm going.
