Moviemorial Day Weekend
May. 27th, 2007 09:51 amLast night, I dreamed I was at Neil Gaiman's house for a signing. Trippy! We talked, I fawned and he showed me his big white dog. It was big and fluffy!
Anyway, I've pretty much been watching movies in theatres this entire weekend. On Friday, I watched Shrek 3 (ehhh...), yesterday, I watched Spiderman 3 (not too bad, not fantastic, but still a fun movie), and tomorrow I'm supposed to watch Pirates 3 with Tabitha. :D Mom was joking that I should watch a movie today but there aren't anymore 'third installments' of movies for me to watch! Earlier, I got all excited from the L.A. Times reporting that 'Paprika' (the latest Satoshi Kon movie) has hit theatres, then realized that it's only been released in New York so far and it won't be out in L.A. till next month! Boooooo. I might as well pop in Return of the King just for amusement.
I talk about movies. Don't click if you want to be spoiled.
Since Neil was in my dream last night, I figured I'd quote his tagline for his latest movie coming out, but we'll get into that later.
Shrek 3: I can never fault Shrek 3 for the animation or the art design, it's fabulous, unique, and every character is so distinctive. I happen to love Shrek 1 and I had fun watching Shrek 2, but Shrek 3 just really didn't deliever as strongly as the first two. The story was a bit of a jumbled mess, the humor seemed really forced, and it felt like the writers were floundering to tie up all the ends and in a way conclude the story for Shrek and his gang. Of course, they've procreated and now there's three ogre babies and four donkey babies to keep the franchise alive. Now Puss in Boots needs to find a nice pussy somewhere and have kittens. The only thing I really liked about the movie was that Eric Idle played Merlin, but everything else was pretty... ehh.
Spiderman 3: Spiderman 3 seemed to have a similar problem with Shrek 3 of the different storylines getting slightly messy. The intergration of the different character journeys didn't seem to mesh very well and some were a bit gratutious, like Sandman, or even Harry's journey. But they were a lot more successful with Spiderman, I still had a good time watching the movie and seeing the different characters interact, fight, etc. The whole Venom storyline felt like it was pushed to the side a bit but for good reason since the audience was meant to focus on what's supposed to be 'normal' in Peter Parker's life. However, Venom is a major villian and while Sandman was supposed to be the sypathetic one, I wanted more from Eddie Brock and Venom. Eddie was this one-sided character who just wanted to be the best which included shooting the best pictures and having the best girl by his side, everything Peter Parker takes away. And while there was Sandman, I've always thought of Venom as the true villian for Spiderman, so maybe Sandman was a bit unneccessary. I did like how they tied up loose ends especially with what really happened to Uncle Ben. And who can resist Emo Boy!Peter Parker and how he dances in the street? XD My brother was imitating the Peter Parker strut, it was hilarious! XD
Movies I'm looking forward to:
Pirates 3 (I read the spoilers so I'm a bit WTF?! but it's keeping me interested)
Paprika
Stardust
Penelope
Ratatouille
Enchanted
Movies I might see:
Waitress
Hairspray
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Surf's Up
The Simpsons' Movie
