Most Honest, Wonderful Speech in the World

This is an amazing speech because it makes it clear that this is not a political or a religious issue, it's a government issue and it's the duty of the government to cater to the equality of all people, of sound mind and body. All these things that fly around, saying that gay marriage changes the definition of marriage, sanctity of marriage, etc, is a load of bullshit.
Yeah, I call bullshit.
The quality, definition, and 'sanctity' of marriage in America has already been tarnished. Even without getting into divorce, there are plenty of problems to day with the 'sanctity' of marriage in America. That while plenty of people reading my post may protest and say that their marriage has sanctity in it and I'm sure it does, I'm speaking on the OVERALL presentation of marriage in America, and whether that has sanctity or not.
As Savino puts out: we have a wedding channel. We have the Bachelor and Bachlorette. We have Elvis wedding chapels in Las Vegas. We have Internet mail-order brides. We even have people who can be ORDAINED on the INTERNET to perform marriages! WE HAVE CRAIGSLIST.
I'm a huge commitment phobe, all the loneliness I feel as a single person is still not enough to drag me out the door in any sort of effort in order to meet someone that I want to marry. Depending on someone to that extent scares the hell out of me, but I can't deny that I applaud and am envious of people who can do that and find that kind of happiness. So what gives any of us the right to deny people who want to be together, who have sanctity and dependability in their partnerships, and deserves the privileges and protection of the state and government?
Does gay marriage affect the sanctity of a straight relationship more than the Bachelor does? More than the wedding channel does? More than BRIDEZILLAS does?
Of course not, that's just silly.

Date: 2009-12-05 01:52 am (UTC)because that's what I do when I fangirl people being smart on important issues. I appreciate your post even more because just today I got a totally bullshit form letter from my congresswoman after some (equally form) letter I'd sent her against the Defense of Marriage Act. I was so pissed this evening that I had to write her back angrily (but classily) to say that I didn't expect her to change her opinion and agree with me but that the way she responded made it clear that she either didn't read mine at all or frankly didn't care, which I find insulting and offensive, especially considering the issue. She'd have been better off not saying anything back at all, which is really what I assumed would happen. *rages*no subject
