Because I'm insane, I thought that I could knit a few Christmas gifts this year... and it's turned into almost a week of frantic knitting and carrying the balls of yarn and needles around with me wherever I go to sneak in a few stitches here and there. Strangely, all of the gifts I'm knitting are for guy friends or are in my family, so the colors are really boring: grays, blues, blacks, reds. Most of them are solid colors although I've managed to put stripes in here and there on some pieces...

But because of all this, I've gotten a lot better at knitting! I now can knit with double pointed needles, I'm more aware of needle sizes and what they do, and I now know how to do pattern things!

This is my favorite thing I have knitted, a pair of Batman fingerless gloves! Sorry that the image quality isn't so great, I took the pic with my phone before I gave the gloves as a gift, but the gloves themselves came out pretty well and I'm ridiculously proud of these. XD

I can't wait to be done with all the really boring knitting I'm doing now so I can finally knit some FUN things for myself. I want to make myself a pair of Wonder Woman fingerless gloves and I'm so ridiculously excited for these, it's kind of stupid. XD It's also inspired me thinking about how fingerless gloves would look like for various superheroes in the JL. But I only need one pair of fingerless gloves, right?

Also... I want to finally knit a dalek. I think I finally have the skills to make one! I think it'll be a Wonder Dalek, done in Wonder Woman colors... because I'm just like that. xD

YOU ARE QUITE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THIS COMMENT XD

I learned how to knit in high school when a bunch of people all of a sudden started knitting and it looked like fun. So various teachers showed me how to do certain things and the rest I picked up from knitting magazines. I ended up teaching our year's student body president to knit too and he made this cute purple scarf for his girlfriend at the time.

I've stopped and started knitting at various times, I either knit a lot or I don't knit at all, so it's taken time for me to learn how to knit in different ways because there are just SO MANY ways of knitting all sorts of stuff. XD It's reeeaally relaxing though and it's a good thing for me to do while watching movies because I don't like having idle hands and this way, I can still watch what's on the screen. :D

:o Do you have a pattern for the Batman fingerless gloves?

Soooort of. I used a pattern called Men's Fingerless Mitts (http://www.piece-by-piece.net/Knit/men_fingerless_mitts.htm) but changed instead of casting on 44, I cast on 40 stitches instead to make a slightly smaller glove (still a man's size though, these gloves are huge on me). I then used this helpful chart of the logo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stripedpetunia/3158342742/) but didn't put the yellow circle around it (I kind of hate the yellow circle and was glad they got rid of it later in the animated series). And then we get into maths and figurings:

1 inch= 6 stitches
Roughly makes the Batman logo with just the bat about 11 stitches tall, 15 stitches wide. I also put a 2 stitch border on each side so it wouldn't stretch to the ends of the glove and sit nicely in the middle.

Also, since I cast on less stitches, I had to change the amount for the thumb part in the beginning, so I K19, place marker, K2, place marker, then K19 to the end.

Hopefully this makes sense, let me know if you have any questions.

oh Batman!!! My kid who works at Starbucks wants some fingerless gloves so badly--perfect for handing out coffees on cold days through the drive through. So a friend of mine is making a pair for her in Starbuck colors, black and green. I may have to get some myself as they look so comfy!

You know that Nick aka [livejournal.com profile] cruentum knew NOTHING about knitting when he started to make Daleks? You might want to talk to him about them as he's made adjustments and improvements on the original pattern floating around. Each one he's made has been better than the last and someday, I may even get the one he made for me. :)

These two are daleks Skittles (the rainbow one obv.) and Blech. Blech now lives with [livejournal.com profile] amand_r and her daughter, and Rainbow lives at Ty Rosa Bed and Breakfast with the owners in Cardiff. [livejournal.com profile] blue_fjords has a solid blue one as does Nick's mom, and I have a rainbow one but it is STILL in Germany. Pout. :)

They are REALLY comfy and I was so surprised how popular they were/still are! I was knitting these for my board teacher over the Thanksgiving holiday and at one point, all of my male family members would see me working on them and comment, "Those would be perfect for golfing" or "I need a pair of those when I go jogging in early mornings" and other things like that. They're not that hard to make and they don't take too long either. :D

Yeah, Nick made it sound so easy and then I looked at the pattern and was like o_O;;;; I couldn't make heads or tails of it! I definitely need to ask him about his adjustments! I love all the funky ones he made, I want to make my own funky one to go with it and even hilariously had this mental image of the 'Justice League of Skaro' where there are a bunch of daleks done in similar colors and motifs as the JL...

But that would take way too much work so just Dalek Wondy shall do XD

Honestly I don't know any more about them than I do Batman or Superman -- I mean you know me, comics are not my thing. But Green Lantern was the first superhero I ever knew about, and I like 'em, and anyway I like green. :D I mean, I like the Flash too, but his logo is kind of lame. :D

Uh, by "not my thing" I mean "not my primary fandom though I enjoy reading them in a casual fashion".

JFC I should not be allowed to talk today Jean, seriously.

HAHA! Don't worry, I knew what you meant (I can speak Sam)! XD I like the Green Lanterns okay, I do think Hal Jordan can be a bit of a tool but I love John Stewert, the one in the Justice League animated series, and I have a soft spot for Kyle Rayner as well. I'm not terribly excited about the GL movie though, I thought Ryan Reynolds was miscast, but I'm excited to see all of the alien Green Lanterns! I wonder if the Green Lantern that's a sentient planet is going to be in it...

Also, duly noted ;D

Ohhh, these are cool! (Foxy linked me!) And seconding what C said -- Nick made his dalek as a first project, and then kinda got hung up on making daleks (and there's a few of us around for tech advice should you get stuck!)

I'm knitting an anglerfish for my sister for Christmas! It's going to look, uh, sort of cute. Which I think might not be the point of anglerfishes.

An... anglerfish?? :O Is there a picture or a pattern???

Date: 2010-12-23 11:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misswinterhill.livejournal.com
I'll post a picture when it's done! The pattern is by Hansi Singh, and here's a pic: http://www.knitpicks.co.uk/patterns/Black-Devil_Anglerfish_Toy_Pattern__D31256223.html

Mine is cuter than that. I used toy eyes, so it doesn't look quite so creepy. And it doesn't have its teeth in yet, which might be a significant up on the cute factor.
