Short review: It felt misnamed and it glowed! Also... where's Sora, Donald and Goofy?!

I've never seen the original Tron. And before I get the pointy fingers and the gasps of shock, let me just point out that I have never seen the Wizard of Oz, or the Indiana Jones movies or the original Star Wars movies until fairly recently. This sort of thing happens when you're the child of immigrant parents who don't often venture out into the strange new world's pop culture... or really venture out at all. Everything I knew about Tron came from playing the Tron level in Kingdom Hearts 2, where Tron was a really cool playable character but didn't really tell me too much about the world of Tron itself.

Anyway, Tron: Legacy. Fun movie, but misnamed. Thankfully, the movie explained a little about the plot of the first Tron movie so that everything made sense and established the back stories of the major characters. The story itself isn't very interesting and the plot takes a back seat, but the movie does a good job in distracting the viewer with really cool special effects and glowyness! The fight scenes are well choregraphed as well, those disc things aren't the most effective weapons in the world, but they did a good job in showing what can actually be done with them. Sailor Moon could learn a thing or two from the fight choreographer.

Really, the best part of this film were the visuals and the soundtrack. It's a fun movie to watch, there's always something going on, something glowy zooming about, and the art direction was really cool. I was impressed the variety of outfits this world had as well, you can only do 'glowy jumpsuit' so much, but there was still a good amount of different types of clothes: robes, pants, shoes, shirts, umbrellas, jackets, etc. And while there was still a touch of the 80's in the movie in the visual look, it still looked modern.

The soundtrack is fun too, Daft Punk's music really fits well with the visuals. In fact, the soundtrack kept me distracted enough to not care so much when the dialogue fell flat.

And that brings me to what I didn't like about the movie: dialogue and characters. First, dialogue. Bleh. Boring, flat, and trying too hard. Is Jeff Bridges's character supposed to sound an aging hippie? Not even Sam's dialogue felt polished or strong, rather the dialogue just caused me to roll my eyes and dragged down the film. Olivia Wilde managed to pull off the cheesy lines, but it works with her character as the wide eyed, slightly naive girl who wants moooreee~

The only actor who managed to take his script and run with it was Michael Sheen, who was AWESOME. Yes, he was the stereotypical 'gay' David Bowie-esque villain, but damn he was so much fun. As soon as he played with that clear cane as he surveyed the fight scene going on in his bar, I thought, "Lasers better come out of that thing." And lo and behold, LASERS. Awesome.

The biggest beef I had with this movie was how they under-used the characters. Quorra's supposed to be the 'hope' for human kind, she's supposed to be 'special' and important and that's why she has to be kept safe... yet we never see HOW she is special. How is she going to change human kind? How can her presence affect the current digital world she lives in?? She didn't seem at all different from any other program in this movie, aside from the fact that she had the Korean letters for 'ah' tattooed on her arm. Yes, we see she's smart, a good fighter, and capable, but other than that, we don't see how she's so damn special.

Sam is boring.

Flynn is cheesy.

Tron is... what the heck, Tron is in the movie and he's ALIVE?! And what about his legacy? After all, this movie is called 'Tron: LEGACY'... so what is it? Is it how he saved Flynn? Is it how all programs should strive to his example and protect the users? The movie used him like how Star Wars used Darth Maul: a silent, glowy, bringer of DOOM. Also, his fate was so vague, he saved the users like he was supposed to and somehow sort of turned back, but it doesn't matter now because he fell into some sort of digital liquid ocean thing and probably died?? Or he didn't die so that there'll be a possibility for another movie, "Tron: No, He's Really In It This Time As An Actual Character".

All in all, yes, action packed fun movie. Good visuals. Good soundtracks. The actors are very pretty. Completely misnamed because the title character isn't really in it except for flashbacks and as as a brainwashed glowy assassin. Fun to see with a group of people, especially ones who make Kingdom Hearts jokes, but probably not really a movie for someone who actually demands a coherent, interesting plot to go with those great visuals.

Sora/Tron is totally one of my crack ships. XDD;

And yeah, I think the movie is mostly for the prettiness and the awesome sound. Although actually, the original deals a little more with Flynn than Tron...and I believe they said the "Legacy" in the title is more referring to Flynn and Sam than Tron's legacy.

HAHAHAHA that is an AWESOME crack ship that I would like to sail on after a bit of alcohol! Got an fic recs? XD

OHHH that makes more sense. I guess 'TRON' just sounds cooler as a title than 'FLYNN'...

YEAH PRETTY MUCH. XD Unfortunately I don't have any fic recs, I think it's pretty rare. I have seen a few arts for it on dA, though!

That is probably the case. Although at least FLYNN LIVES looks good on a shirt. XD

Oh man, that takes me back to seeing people with "FRODO LIVES (and Sam is With Him!)" shirts.

FLYNN LIVES. AND TRON IS WITH HIM. BUT NOT LIKE THAT BECAUSE HE'S WITH SORA.
