Thank you so much for sharing this video! I could listen to him talk for ever. I just come away from hearing him talk feeling wiser and inspired. I'm just *chinhands*-ing the whole video.
boy, he has a strange view on goal orientation! I have to agree to disagree with him.
I think setting goals is great. I set small goals. I feel great when I achieve them. I set big goals, I feel like a rock star when I achieve THEM. And then after I do that, immediately, I'm thinking "YES! Now I'm going to do THIS cool thing next!" I'm never having the feeling of "what do I do now, I feel so empty".
I do agree that social networking to some degree as become a cult of personality.
Also, it's not possible for all people to have a job that is fun. Not everyone has that luck or that ability. Sometimes you must work at something you don't like to pay the bills. It's very easy to say you should find something fun to work at. It's not always realistic. People worked in coal mines to feed their families. If they just said "I don't want to, because it's not fun" what would their families have done?
The best way to talk to someone is to ask questions about them, Yes, but that's just basic "How to Win Friends and Influence People".
Blaming others for your life is useless. Yes.
I should attempt to talk more to total strangers, though. ala, Endor Express Doctor Who.
Haha, yeah I thought so too! I wondered if some of that POV came from his experience as a manic depressive, mostly because of the high that comes from achieving a long term go, and while a person like me or you would go, "all right, that was GREAT! Next thing!", someone like him would have felt that high, and then feels the low very strongly right afterward, and it's something he's described experiencing on documentary he did on manic depression.
I think it's a lovely thought, to be able to have a job that's fun, and there is a lot more fulfillment when a job is enjoyable since it's something that a person will be doing for probably most of their adult life. But you're right, it's not always something that happens or is possible for all people, and the people it is possible for are very fortunate indeed.
What hit me the most was the whining, he's so right about that part that it's sort of embarrassing. XD I like to whine, it's nice to just let it out and complain and whine about how life sucks, everything sucks, blah blah blah. But it's very egocentric, it becomes all about me, and wow... that's embarrassing. Sometimes it does have to be let out, but I think I let it out way too much over the past year. xD
And I should attempt to talk more to strangers too... especially in a new place. If the Doctor tried to talk to me in that Endor spaceship thing, I probably would've given him the stink eye and shuffled into a dark corner with my knitting, books, and sketchpad. XD I'm naturally solitary, I like being alone and doing my own stuff, but I do miss out on new experiences because of this.
