Back from AX!
Jul. 7th, 2003 01:41 amIt was splendiferous to say the least! The convention itself was kinda boring, no interesting anime or panels, well not a lot anyway. But I had fun and got some new experiences!! Whooooo!
Wednsday
Went to my Practive of Visual Narratives class to turn in my mid-term, left after we got Lynleigh's car packed and Angela came to pick me up! We went to Downtown Disney first and had some fooood and talked! Went to the Hilton and practiced my lines for AX Idol, got about five hours of sreeep!
Thursday
Put on my Elli costume (Harvest Moon 64) and my Saturn wig and just poked around the convention. Anne and Mandy arrived, I changed, Anne and I went to the Myu panel for a bit, but we both had to leave early, me because of AX idol stuff and Anne because she had to go to get Mandy.
AX Idol... hot damn that thing took FOREVER! First off, it started at SEVEN and I had to arrive and STAY backstage at FIVE THIRTY. The plan first was people go on stage, perform, judges give crit, we go backstage, the end. There were over 35 entries! Plus, there were LATE entries added! There were also plans of an improv thingie that I volunteered for, plus a second round where the actors get to re-dub anime and the singers sing more songs. Never happened because the bloody thing ran so damn long!
My complaints were that there were too many judges: Crispin, Talisen, some Japanese director (with two translators), umm another VA director, and a representative from Bandai; plus there were too many entries and it was very disorganized. But hey, live and learn, by making mistakes, ppl get to know better. In general, when my turn FINALLY came up, I was so bored and tired of being backstage, I just went up and went crazy. OH! And the rules were not outlined very well, I was told that I could only perform stuff from ANIME and it was a monolouge... uhhh how can I perform stuff from anime in monologue form? Anime involves too many conversations X_X So I just did what I could, I decided to voice three different characters at once, which turned out to be a bad move -_-;; But the judges weren't too harsh on me like they were on the other contestants, so go me! Yeah... but we had too many panic attacks back stage X_X;; But the winners were talented and I was very happy for them! Boredom strikes when you congo dance of stage with two other equally bored people. But I got good feedback from my short bout of insanity, and Crispin drew me aside to tell me that he wanted me to show up to his VA panel on Friday where I would get a chance to redub anime with him and Talisen, and that he had a role lined up for me! =D
Had pizza with Rey and Kelly afterwards. Kelly earned a new nickname: Rey Rey's Forbidden Wet Dream, or Forbie for short >=D Bwahahaa! And there was rehearsal. Owch, feet in PAAAIIIN!
Friday
Woke up on the floor and got general complaints about me snoring (which I usually do not do). But the room was dry, the pillows were lumping and dammit I did not sleep well at ALL! But today was our GW group day! What sticks out most in my mind right now was the panel!
The panel was sooo much FUN! First off, Crispin and Talisen called up the AX Idol contenstants to go up because they felt badly that we were guarenteed to redub anime and didn't get a chance to do it. I was sitting towards the back with Anne and Mandy so I was one of the last people to get up to the front, and there was a row of chairs where the contestants could sit down and the only chair left was the first chair so I sat in it. Yep, Jean became first one up! X_X;; So I stood up and was handed a headset with a mic and was told that I got to redub a part of I My Me! Strawberry Eggs =D And tadaa! I was playing the cute, ditzy girl character of Fuko! OMG she was so cute! I had to do a lot of takes and was startled when all of a sudden my voice boomed through the speakers and everyone laughed but it went well.
My lines were: "*sigh* He's so cool... *sees can falling* Ah? *leans over to pick it up* Ahh!! Ahhh ahhh waaa waaaiiit aaahhhh! *gasp gasp gasp gasp* WAAAAA!!! *SPLAT*"
More funny stuff that happened:
Chyna: Here they coomeee!! 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2... does she say one?
Crispin: *speaking, messes up on line* blrraaaarrrggh! Okay, one more take for me!
Me: So sayeth the professional XD
Talisen: Yes, we ARE professionals!
Also, that night, I was supposed to go to the fanfiction panel, but after helping Alison get her costume back to her hotel room in the Marriot, I ran into Crispin and his girlfriend Izzy with Talisen and a bunch of other VAs, including the original dub actress for Fuko XD It was fun to say the least, and very enlightening. Izzy is very very wise and went through a lot and we just started talking and talking and it got very deep into relationships, society problems, story telling differences between anime and american cartoons, violece with and without consequences on tv, God, religion, etc etc etc. Rey met up with me at one point and he joined in, and was promptly blown away by Izzy.
I don't know what Crispin, Talisen, and the other men were talking about but it was funny when they commented on our conversation XD
Crispin: Duuudeee!
Talisen: Duuudee!
Crispin: Duuuudee!
Talisen: Duuuuudee!
and more rounds of Duudee but it was allll goood =D I did make it to the panel in the end, but it was boring and rehearsal was CANCELED for that night! YAY!
Saturday
Put on Saturn, went out with group, was MOBBED! TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY MOBBED.
Best comment: "Wow, those are the most attractive Sailor Senshi I have ever seen in my life." and it was by NON-FANBOY!! He didn't even stalk us for pictures!
We had a great photoshoot after the Masq rehearsal meeting (very dull, livened it up by cheering and doing the wave at one point) and met up with Tony and two other buff guys and this adorable Sakura! =D We had Sailor Senshi v. Akuma, Ryu, Ken and Sakura for a few pictures XD
After the photoshoot, we got interviewed by some people who were doing a documentary on anime conventions, cosplay and fans! They wanted US to be in it and then wanted us to be one of the main parts! Long interview, and they took footage of us posing in costumes!
I did go to the other VA panel for a bit and made it in time to hear Crispin's forced rendition of Touga's 'world is our egg' speech with a modified ending of 'for the revolution in my pants!' And some girl recorded it!!! Must search for soundfiles for posterity later XD Said hi to Izzy who didn't recognize me until I got up close XD
Then came the masq (AAAAAH!!) Met up with Allifay and the rest again and went to the ACC, was given camera and asked to take backstage footage for the documentary... oh gosh there were so many amazing groups! The Wish group and the Spirited Away group were definetly my favorites! I was so sad we missed Jessie's Robotech skit though =( If anyone has a tape, please give to Jeanie!
Lots of people didn't recognize me in my Saturn costume X_X;; I wonder why... (not even LIONAL recongnized me!!!) Got a group together and went to DENNY'S for some close-to-real food! =D
Sunday
Dealers Room! I got two CDs, a GW doujinshi, and a WING ZERO CUSTOM MODEL!! I've been looking for one for ages! And I got to watch and participate in the Mythology panel (which is always fun and enlightening) and had lunch with Crispin and Izzy and Talisen and lots of other people. Wow, just spending time with the Industry folks felt so... enlightening? I think it is enlightening, I get to hear about how the Industry is nowadays, as well as hear other viewpoints on different artists, plus get lots of advice. It was a great experience to say the least.
I did finish my HARRY POTTER BOOK TODAY! I read nonstop as soon as Lynleigh and I got home! I thought it was _good_ but it's just not one of my favorite HP ones. A lot of things happened and the main storyline is falling into place and I'm looking forward to the next one coming out, but I just felt... unfufilled? A bit annoyed with Harry too but hey, it's allll goood =D

Date: 2003-07-08 08:25 pm (UTC)Taliesin Jaffe and I are old friends, though we have been kind of out of touch in the past few years. We've known each other since '95. We had a local anime club.

Date: 2003-07-14 01:25 am (UTC)Thank you, Yas! Yesh, Taliesin is most awesome! It's really funny, my old biology teacher knew him when he worked at Banzai Anime Store, and then a singer at the Renaissaunce Faire/nude model from Art Center told me that he and Taliesin were old friends. PLUS Lisa of Hankie Spankie Cosplay knows him and he was a judge for Ani-Magic 2002 when I was the co-host!
Dang, I know a lot of people that know Taliesin X_X; I should tell him about this sometime XD
