Fanfiction, it's out there

bluejeans07Mandy posted a good question on her LJ, "How did you get into fanfiction? What about slash (yaoi)?" Here's my response:
How Jean Got Into Fanfiction
It was a hot, hot summer day after Jean's graduation from middle school. Jean wanted to go to Anime Expo and her parents gave her permission. So, to seek out information, Jean went over to her uncle's house since he had the internet and Jean did not. After Jean found all the necessary information, Jean decided to surf the net and look for Slayers stuff since she was getting into Slayers at the time. On a webpage called 'The Royal Fool's Slayers Webpage', Jean discovered a small bit dedicated to fanfiction writen by the Royal Fool herself. So Jean read it, and Jean became amused. _Very_ amused. So amused, that when Jean got the Internet in her own house, Jean spent a good deal of time reading fanfiction, slowly progressing from Slayers to Yu Yu Hakusho to Fushigi Yuugi to Gundam Wing to Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings, etc etc etc!
Jean began to write fanfiction after Jean desired to greatly be a part of the original storyline. But what Jean did was evil... Jean became... A MARY SUE! Okay... well a slight variation of a Mary Sue, but it can not be denied that Jean did do many Mary Sue-esq types of writing, letting her natural hormones take control and capture all the bishonen for herself!
Not wanting to be alone with her strange hobby, Jean wrote her friends into the stories, where the girls fall through WST (weird swirly things) and end up in anime universes. Jean got some of her stories posted online because it was a free submission and showed it off. Basically, it was hook, line, and sinker. Bwa ha ha ha ha!
How Jean Got into Yaoi/Slash
Jean blames this on Yu Yu Hakusho and the many KuramaxHiei fanfics Jean has read. Jean's favorite Yu Yu Hakusho character was Kurama and Jean found it interesting that so many people paired him up with Hiei, they were both boys! But Jean thought it over and saw that the two of them were _really really_ compatible and worked well, as well as looked _really really_ good together. So Jean eagerly read more KuramaxHiei, thus becoming her favorite YYH pairing.
But Jean also read plenty of het involving YusukexKeiko, KoenmaxBotan, ShizuruxKuramaxHiei (don't ask), and many others, thus having a variety of taste in pairings. Slowly, it became that pairings were a side-thing and as long as the story was _really really_ good and _really really_ well written, Jean didn't really care who was paired with whom.
As for HP slash, Jean decides it's fine, most of the fics on her laptop being Draco/Harry since that's what Mandy gave to Jean, but Jean likes reading Remus/Sirus as a slash pairing, Lily/James and Harry/Ginny as het pairings, but really, Jean doesn't care. Jean likes stories and creativity, as long as there are good stories to be read, Jean will read them! As long as there are good story ideas bouncing around in her head, Jean will write them!
